- We got to the cliff edge after decending. When we started down the side of the cliff, we came under heavy arrow fire. After a hurried trip down we took cover, and immediately got attacked by a pair of chokers.
- After quickly dispatching the chokers, the adventurers healed themselves. Not coming under another immediate attack, Barnin and Donnor finally had a chance to study their surroundings. The cliff decended to this tunnel that opens about 40 feet away. On the other side lies a large pile of stone. Discerning that there was no other way to get out, they choose to climb the stone pile. Upon reaching the stone pile, they realized there is a ledge on this side too, much like the ledge that they were getting showered with arrows from on the other side.
- No sooner than coming to that realization, they began to take arrow fire again. After trading arrows with these cave-dwellers, the heroes finally get the upper hand, ending their existance. Immediately after the bow-wielding cave-dwellers fell, a savage female cave-dweller dove from the ledge, wielding two daggers. After a hard fought battle, they bested the enraged mistress. Not completely unscathed though, Donnor had to be brought back from the brink of death with a healing potion.
- Tried to sell MW greataxes to Tyrol at the Captain’s Blade, but he wasn’t interested due to their questionable source.
- Went to Venelle’s to sell MW composite longbows; she agreed to obtain a +1 ring of protection for Donnor in trade for the eight bows. (Due in ten days from Greyhawk)
- Delved deep into the Dourstone mine. After exploring the mine (left. right, right, left through barricaded tunnel), discovered the elevator that led to the Dark Cathedral chamber, from which three halls branched. They decided to explore the eastern hall, after dispatching some evil-aligned planar-touched creatures that fled in that direction.
- It turns out that it is a temple dedicated to Hextor, the Scourge of Battle. The party successfully fought their way through the entire complex, essentially slaughtering every last cultist, save one, the apparent leader who very bravely fled the complex while his minions stayed to defend it!
- Met with Luzane Parrin at Luzare’s gaming parlor. Luzane was a bit taken with Barnin. She would really like to see Balobar dealt with (just like everyone else) and encouraged the party to investigate Ragnolin mine.
- Staked out Ragnolin mine. After watching the patrols’ routine, decided to sneak up and break in. With a distraction from some thrown rocks, and some cleverly placed summoned badgers, Barnin and Donner successfully scaled the wooden stockade wall and entered the mine.
- Met with Gelch Tilgast (crusty old gray-haired codger) in his own mine. No protection. Also met with Chaum Gansworth (handsome, blonde-haired kid wise well beyond his years) at his restaurant, The Rusty Bucket. Was alone at the head table during non-peak hours. Made an appt. to meet with Luzane Parrin at Lazare’s House this evening.
- Learned that none of the mine managers have anything good to say about Balobar, describing the extents of his depravity. Learned that Balobar and Ragnolin have an apparent alliance that scares Chaum.
- The party suspects Balobar in the disappearance of the tax revenue. Believes he is somehow involved with an inside informant of the Able Carter Coaching Company to arrange the attacks on the tax caravans.
- Met with Mayor Lanod Neff for the first time. Lanod is cool and collected, and claims that he is paying his taxes due. He stated that he sends his monies via Able Carter Coaching caravans. It would make sense that the taxes are not reaching Greyhawk given the recent caravan raids. But who is behind it?
- Lanod Neff also indicated that there’s probably not a soul in town that would not like to see him removed from office, especially the mine managers. He suspects Balobar Smenk most of all.
- Traveled to one of Smenk’s Mines just 10 minutes north on Company Road
- – Simple mine with a shack office; guards told party to find Smenk in town
- Found stables (Bldg 19), visited the Spinning Giant for the best ale (so far!) in Diamond Lake, and passed a mysterious, exotic looking building displaying a sign with the bust of a man saluting the moon
- Passed another stables (Bldg 13) on the way to Smenk’s storage mine (11)
- Searched mine for contraband and really didn’t find anything worthy of note
- Headed back to the Able Carter Coaching Inn. Passed Jalek’s and was accosted by some beggars
- Hailed by a cleric of St. Cuthbert in the square plaza; offered to “purify” our souls!
- Met Allustan, agreed to arrange a meeting w/ Lanod tomorrow
- Looked at Deepspike mine; actually opened the locked doors and peeked inside
- Went to abandoned mine
- Went to Dourstone Mine and met Ragnolin Dourstone
- Learned that most would like to see Balobar Smenk removed from power
- Went out for a night on the town in Diamond Lake
- Saw an evening sermon in front of the Church of St. Cuthbert where Jierian Wierus was giving a fiery sermon to a packed house and whipping himself in a religious furor
- Entered The Feral Dog and witnessed a dog pit fight. Lost a gold. Met Fester Trollump.
- Went to The Emporium and hobnobbed with some “nobles”. Gambled and drank a bit to loosen some tongues. Learned a bit about Diamond Lake’s power brokers.
- Fought off the thugs, AGAIN! This time they were armed with knives. They seemed to be even less effective armed!
- Ate breakfast with Fester at the Able Carter Coaching Inn and learned that to get an audience with Lanod, you must get in good with Allustan, Lanod’s brother.
- Arrived in Diamond Lake
- Staying at the Able Carter Coaching Inn – Manned by Cade
- Kicked the crap out of four thugs that were picking on a dirty halfling
- Met Tyrol at The Captain’s Blade; bought the wand off of him, and some MW kukris
- Spoke with a minor functionary at Neff’s Manor. Told him that they were there to investigate the tax evasion
